What are free radicals?

Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress

Free radicals are atoms, molecules, or ions with unpaired electrons. These unpaired electrons are highly reactive and play an important role in several chemical reactions.

In humans, several different types of free radicals, generated from oxygen and nitrogen, play an important role in several biochemical reactions and gene expressions.

Normally, free radicals are generated in the body during the use of oxygen in the metabolism of certain compounds, such as air, food, and drink. The body’s cells use oxygen to produce energy. During this process of generating energy, free radicals are produced as byproducts. It is estimated that about 2% of the oxygen consumed by the body’s cells remains partially unused, creating approximately 20 billion free radicals per cell each day.

During sickness or infection, the immune system is activated and continues to generate high levels of free radicals within the infected cells. Excessive production of free radicals by the immune system can also damage normal cells, increasing the risk of disease. Environmental factors, including stress, smoke and pollution, and elevated iron and copper in the body also contribute to the creation of free radicals within the body at an increased rate. This free radical assault occurs 24 hours a day.

Oxidative stress is caused by the excessive production of free radicals within the body and from external sources.
